TIAA and TIAA-CREF
The shorter TIAA brand and the older TIAA-CREF wording belong to different naming contexts, not a simple old-company/new-company pair.
The Public-Facing Brand Changed
TIAA’s public product primer states that TIAA-CREF existed as a brand until 2016, when the CREF name was dropped from the public-facing brand. That history explains why older documents and long-running references may use the hyphenated form.
The Hyphenated Wording Still Appears
Current public notices list legal entities whose names include TIAA-CREF, such as TIAA-CREF Investment Management, LLC and TIAA-CREF Individual & Institutional Services, LLC. A historical brand change did not erase every current legal name containing the wording.

Why “They Are the Same” Is Too Broad
TIAA can refer to a brand, a corporate family or a specific issuer depending on context. CREF continues as a separate companion organization. Reading the full name and its category is more accurate than treating every occurrence as an interchangeable label.
