Plan vs Account vs Contract

Plan, account and contract are related labels, but they are not reliable substitutes for one another.

Plan

A plan is generally the broader retirement arrangement described by plan documents and the sponsoring organization. Public materials may discuss several products, records or contract forms within that broader context.

Account

Account often refers to the record or view used to organize holdings and information. Official support wording shows that account and contract terminology can overlap in some contexts, so “account” should not be treated as one universal legal category.

Contract

A contract identifies a legal product form or agreement. Official product materials use RA, GRA, SRA, GSRA, RC and RCP as contract-family labels, but ownership and structure are not identical across those families.

A Relationship, Not a Universal Formula

It can be useful to picture plan, account and contract as three related layers. The picture is an educational model—not a conclusion about any individual’s documents. Exact meaning depends on the plan documents and product type.
